Description of this podcast segment:
In this segment, the topic of filing for disability is addressed; more specifically, the steps to filing for disability (either in the SSI disability program, social security disability program, or, in the case of a concurrent benefit application, both programs) are given coverage.
The segment discusses the fact that applications for disability can be filed online using the social security administration website, however it also points out that this only applies to social security disability applications and not to SSI disability applications. For many claimants, the most effective, most informative, and least confusing method of application may simply be to directly contact a local social security office and set up an appointment to file a disability application and have a disability interview conducted.
Of course, the social security administration currently strongly advocates the use of the online system. But this is not because this is the best option for claimants and potential claimants. The online option simply cuts down on manpower requirements for the social security administration. Obviously, the best option for initiating a disability application will be the one that allows an applicant to ask all the appropriate (and necessary) questions regarding the filing of their claim so that A) they can understand more fully how their claim will be handled and evaluated and B) so that potential mistakes and deficiencies can be avoided. For example, claimants who file for disability may have questions as to what to do in the event that their claim is denied. Or, they may have questions as to who will evaluate their claim (this is done by a disability examiner at the initial claim and reconsideration appeal levels, and by an administrative law judge at the hearing level). Such questions can only be answered succintly by a “live person”.
